Question 92: What is the law of God?

Answer: God spake all these words, saying1: I am Jehovah thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

I.      Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.

II.    Thou shalt not make unto thee a graven image, nor any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them; for I, Jehovah thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, upon the third and upon the fourth generation of them that hate me, and showing lovingkindness unto thousands of them that love Me, and keep my commandments.

III.   Thou shalt not take the name of the Jehovah thy God in vain; for Jehovah will not hold him guiltless, that taketh his name in vain.

IV.   Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work; but the seventh day is the sabbath unto Jehovah thy God; in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy man servant, nor thy maid servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; for in six days Jehovah made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore Jehovah blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.

V.   Honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long in the land which Jehovah thy God giveth thee.

VI.   Thou shalt not kill.

VII.  Thou shalt not commit adultery.

VIII. Thou shalt not steal.

IX.   Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

X.   Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his man servant, nor his maid servant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbor's.

1Ex. 20:1-17, And God spake all these words, saying, I [am] the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness [of any thing] that [is] in heaven above, or that [is] in the earth beneath, or that [is] in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God [am] a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth [generation] of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day [is] the sabbath of the LORD thy God: [in it] thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that [is] within thy gates: For [in] six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them [is], and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. Thou shalt not kill. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that [is] thy neighbour's.

Deut. 5:6-21, I [am] the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. Thou shalt have none other gods before me. Thou shalt not make thee [any] graven image, [or] any likeness [of any thing] that [is] in heaven above, or that [is] in the earth beneath, or that [is] in the waters beneath the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God [am] a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth [generation] of them that hate me, And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments. Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for the LORD will not hold [him] guiltless that taketh his name in vain. Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee. Six days thou shalt labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day [is] the sabbath of the LORD thy God: [in it] thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that [is] within thy gates; that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou. And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and [that] the LORD thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the LORD thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day. Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. Thou shalt not kill. Neither shalt thou commit adultery. Neither shalt thou steal. Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbour. Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour's wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour's house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or any [thing] that [is] thy neighbour's.

Question 93: How are these commandments divided?

Answer: Into two tables1; the first of which teaches what must be our attitude toward God; the second, what duties we owe to our neighbor2.

1Deut. 4:13 "And He declared unto you His covenant, which He commanded you to perform, even ten commandments; and He wrote them upon two tables of stone."

Ex. 34:28, 29 "And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And He wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments. And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses' hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with Him."

Deut. 10:3, 4 "And I made an ark of shittim wood, and hewed two tables of stone like unto the first, and went up into the mount, having the two tables in mine hand. And He wrote on the tables, according to the first writing, the ten commandments, which the LORD spake unto you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly: and the LORD gave them unto me."

2Matt. 22:37-40, Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second [is] like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Question 94: What does God require in the first commandment?

Answer: That, as much as I love my soul’s salvation, avoid and flee all idolatry1, sorcery, soothsaying, superstition2, invocation of saints or any other creatures3; and rightly acknowledge the only true God4, trust in Him alone5, submit to Him6 with all humility7 and patience, expect all good8 from Him only, and love9, fear10, and honor11 Him with my whole heart; so that I leave and forsake all creatures rather than do even the least thing against His will12.

11Jn. 5:21, Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

1 Cor. 6:10 Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God."

1 Cor. 10:7, 14 "Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play"; "Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry."

Deut. 18:9,10, When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. Rev. 22:8,9, And I John saw these things, and heard [them]. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. Then saith he unto me, See [thou do it] not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.

4John 17:3 "And this is life eternal, that they might know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom Thou hast sent."

5Jer. 17:5, 7 "Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD"; "Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is."

6Heb. 10:36 "For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise."

Phil. 2:14 "Do all things without murmurings and disputings."

71 Pet. 5:5, 6 "Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Matt. 22:37 "Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind."

10Deut. 6:2, That thou mightest fear the LORD thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.

Psa. 111:10, The fear of the LORD [is] the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do [his commandments]: his praise endureth for ever.

Prov. 1:7, 9:10, The fear of the LORD [is] the beginning of knowledge: [but] fools despise wisdom and instruction... He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow: but a prating fool shall fall.

12Matt. 5:29, 30 "And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy membersshould perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. Question 95: What is idolatry?

Answer: It is, instead of the one true God who has revealed Himself in His Word, or besides Him, to devise or have something else on which to place our trust1.
