Question 122: What is the first petition?

Answer: Hallowed be Thy name. That is: grant us, first, rightly to know Thee1, and to sanctify, glorify and praise Thee in all Thy works, in which Thy power, wisdom, goodness, justice, mercy and truth shine forth2; further also, that we may so order and direct our whole life, thoughts, words and actions, that Thy name may not be blasphemed but honored and praised on our account3.

1John 17:3 "And this is life eternal, that they might know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom Thou hast sent."

Jer. 9: 24 , "but let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth Me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD."

Jer. 31:33,34, But this [shall be] the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

Matt. 16:17 "And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but My Father which is in heaven."

James 1:5 "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him."

Psa. 119,105, Thy word [is] a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

2Psa. 119:137, "Righteous art Thou, O LORD, and upright are Thy judgments. Thy testimonies that Thou hast commanded are righteous and very faithful."

Luke 1:46,47; 68,69,"And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord. And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. ... Blessed [be] the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people, And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David; "

Psa. 145:8, 9 "The LORD is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy. The LORD is good to all: and His tender mercies are over all His works."

Rom. 11:33, O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable [are] his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

3Psa. 71:8"Let my mouth be filled with Thy praise and with Thy honour all the day."

Psa. 115: 1,"Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto Thy name give glory, for Thy mercy, and for Thy truth's sake."
