Question 12: Since, then, by the righteous judgment of God, we deserve temporal and eternal punishment, is there no way by which we may escape that punishment, and be again received into favor?

Answer: God will have His justice satisfied1: therefore we must make this full satisfaction to the same, either by ourselves, or by another2.

1Gen. 2:17, And the LORD God formed man [of] the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Ex. 23:7, Keep thee far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay thou not: for I will not justify the wicked.

Ezek. 18:4, Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

Matt. 5:26, Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.

2Thess. 1:6, Seeing [it is] a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you;

Luke 16:2 And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward.

2Rom. 8:4, That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Question 13: But can we ourselves make this satisfaction?

Answer: By no means; on the contrary, we daily increase our debt1.

1Job 9:2-3, I know it is so of a truth: but how should man be just with God? If he will contend with Him, he cannot answer Him one of a thousand.

Job 15:14-16, What is man, that he should be clean? and he whichis born of a woman, that he should be righteous? Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight. How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?

Job 4:18,19, Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and his angels he charged with folly: How much less [in] them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation [is] in the dust, [which] are crushed before the moth?

Ps. 130:3, If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?

Matt. 6:12, And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

Matt. 18:25, But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.

Matt. 16:26, For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

Question 14: Can there be found anywhere, a mere creature able to satisfy for us?

Answer: None; for, first, God will not punish any other creature for the sin which man has committed1; and, further, no mere creature can sustain the burden of God's eternal wrath against sin, and deliver others from it2.

1Ezek. 18:4, Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

Gen. 3:17, And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed [is] the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat [of] it all the days of thy life;

2Nah. 1:6, Who can stand before his indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? his fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by him.

Ps. 130:3, If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?

Question 15: What manner of mediator and deliverer, then, must we seek?

Answer: One who is a true1 and righteous2 man, and yet more powerful than all creatures; that is, one who is withal true God3.

11Cor. 15:21, For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.

2Heb. 7:26, For such an high priest became us, [who is] holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;

3Isa. 7:14; 9:6, Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call His name Immanuel... For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Jer. 23:6, In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this [is] his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Luke 11:22, But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils.
