Question 127: What is the sixth petition?

Answer: And bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. That is: since we are so weak in ourselves that we cannot stand a moment1; and besides, since our sworn enemies, the devil2, the world3, and our own flesh4, cease not to assault us, be pleased to preserve and strengthen us by the power of Thy Holy Spirit, that we may not succumb in this spiritual warfare5, but always offer strong resistance, till at last we obtain a complete victory6.

1John 15:5, I am the vine, ye [are] the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

Psa. 103:14 "For He knoweth our frame; He remembereth that we are dust."

21 Pet. 5:8 "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour."

Eph. 6:12 "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places."

3John 15:19"If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you."

4Rom. 7:23 "But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members."

Gal. 5:17 "For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would."

5Matt. 26:41 "Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."

Mark 13:33 "Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is."

51 Thes. 3:13 "To the end He may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all His saints."

1 Thes. 5:23 "And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ."

Question 128: How do you conclude your prayer?

Answer: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. That is: all this we ask of Thee because Thou, as our King who hast power over all things, art both willing and able to give us all good1, and that thereby not we but Thy holy name may be glorified for ever2.

1Rom. 10:12 "For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon Him."

2 Pet. 2:9 "The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished."

2John 14:13 "And whatsoever ye shall ask in My name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son."

Jer. 33:8,9, And I will cleanse them from all their iniquity, whereby they have sinned against me; and I will pardon all their iniquities, whereby they have sinned, and whereby they have transgressed against me. And it shall be to me a name of joy, a praise and an honour before all the nations of the earth, which shall hear all the good that I do unto them: and they shall fear and tremble for all the goodness and for all the prosperity that I procure unto it.

Psa. 115:1, "Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto Thy name give glory, for Thy mercy, and for Thy truth's sake."

Question 129: What does the word Amen signify?

Answer: Amen signifies: it shall truly and surely be; for my prayer is more certainly heard of God than I feel in my heart that I desire these things of Him1.

12 Cor. 1:20 "For all the promises of God in Him are yea, and in Him Amen, unto the glory of God by us."

2 Tim. 2:13 "If we believe not, yet He abideth faithful: He cannot deny Himself."
